Abstract

The aim of this is to determine whether positive antinuclear antibody
(ANA),anticardiolipin (Acl), Lupus anticoagulant (LA) and bilological false positive
test for syphilis (BFP) are associated with a higher risk of recurrent abortion.
The results can be summarized as follows:
The prevalence of autoantibodies (ANA,LA, Acl and VDRL)
Was highly significant in the study group compared to the control group.
The antinuclear positive sera were significantly higher in the study group than in the control group.
Anticardiolipin antibodies were significantly higher in the study than the control group.
Lupus anticoagulant antibodies were higher in the study group compared to the control group ,however, the difference was statistically insignificant.
VDRLwas higher in the study group compared to the control group ,however , the difference was statistically insignificant.
Antinuclear anyibodies were positive in all patients with LA.
LA was positive in only 16.8% (2patients) with positive ANA.
LN conclusion, this study demonstrates that laboratory autoimmune abnormalities occur commonly in women with recurrent spontaneous abortion. They are most common in women who have otherwise unexplained pregnancy losses;however, positive results are found to a lesser extent in controls while, the exact relationship between autoantibodies and recurrent pregnancy losses is unknown, this study clearly supports the existence of such a relationship and suggests that unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion may be a marker for an autoimmune disease even in women without other clinical complaints.
It is recommended that recurrent spontaneous aborters to be tested for ANA,
aCL, LA and VDRL specially if no cause could be detected to explain the aetiology of recurrent abortion.
