Abstract

In recent years enterococci have become responsible for serious clinical and nosocomial infections, including endocarditis, bacteremia, and urinary tract infections. They are now recognized as the most prevalent cause of nosocomial bacteremias. The increase in incidence of enterocococcal infections is partly a result of increasing the risk factors e.g. immunocompromized patients but is also a result of the spread of the multi- resistant enterococci. The increase in glycopeptide resistance
among enterococci is of clinical concern in itself but also because enterococci can transfer antibiotic resistance genes to Staphylococcus aureus. Vancomycin resistant enterococci are now an important universal problem in hospitals worldwide. This study was performed at Menoufiya University Hospitals to estimate the frequency of isolation of enterococci and to study their antibiotic resistance pattern, moreover detecting VRE by disc diffusion method and by MIC from patients at different wards. This study covers the period April 2008 to May 2009. Samples were obtained from 200hospitalized cases (group I) and 76 cases surrounding them (group II)<and from 50 healthy people (group III). All samples obtained were cultured on bile esculine, blood and MacConkey agar. Enterococci were identified by their morphology,
