Abstract

As the mother and fetus share, an average half of their genomic DNA sequences. Thus it is only possible to detect uniquely fetal DNA sequences that are paternally inherited. There is great interest in the development of gender independent nucleic acid markers, and RNA is a likely candidate. The clinical applications of fetal DNA measurement in maternal plasma and serum have focused on the measurement of total DNA and the detection of uniquely fetal gene sequences.
It is relatively easy to identify male DNA in maternal plasma and serum, which is a potential clinical application and non invasive identification of more fetuses at risk for X linked disorders. A novel observation was made that preeclampsia was associated with a significant elevation in both cell free fetal DNA and free maternal DNA levels. The real time PCR offers several advantages over normal PCR procedures, for instance, it is less prone to contamination, as the results for are analyzed automatically without having to open the PCR reaction vessel. It also permits the rapid analysis of numerous samples and is therefore much better suited to automation. A further reason it is able to quantitate the amount of that fetal maternal.
