Abstract

The experiment aged rats supplemented by 300 and 600 mg/kg Lcarnitine, 10% dried mushroom and 300 mg/kg mushroom extract showed higher food intake than and the mean and values were 17.9, 18.1, 17.3 and 17.5 gm/day, respectively. The aged rats positive control group fed 9.3 gm/day, meanwhile, the young rats fed 12.7 gm/day. The aged rat supplemented on L-carnitine, mushroom and mushroom extract were less body weight than the negative control rats. The increase of supplemented by L-carnitine was higher in loss of weight. The groups of aged rats fed L-carnitine orally in different concentration (300 and 600 mg/kg for day), 10% mushroom and 300 mg/kg mushroom extract induced significant decreases in serum total cholesterol. The low level of serum total lipids for other groups indicated the effect of carnitine, mushroom and mushroom extracted in lowering lipid in aged rats blood. No significant difference of the triglycerides contents between G6 and G4 supplemented by 300 mg/kg mushroom extract and 600 mg/kg Lcarnitine, also no significant difference of the triglycerides contents between G3 and G5 supplemented with 300 mg/kg L-carnitine and 10% dried mushroom. Results of the present study showed that supplemented by L-carnitine experimental to aged rats decreased serum TC, TG and TL. Also, that feeding experimental diets on 10% dried mushroom to aged rats decreased serum lipid profile. Supplemented by 300 mg/kg mushroom extract resulted decreased lipid profile for aged rats and non significant compared to supplemented by L-carnitine. 102 Results of the present study showed that supplemented by mushroom extract experimental to aged rats significant increased serum HDL-C. Meanwhile, that feeding experimental diets on 10% dried mushroom to aged rats decreased serum LDL-C and VLDL-C. Supplemented by 300 mg/kg mushroom extract resulted decreased lipoproteins fractions for aged rats and non significant compared to supplemented by L-carnitine. The rats supplemented by mushroom extract showed that the same effect and no significant with the rats group supplemented with L-carnitine from AI, ratio of TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C. The administration of the aged rats (group 2) induced significant increases in serum ALT, AST and ALP activities. The administration of L-carnitine 300 and 600 mg, dried mushroom 10% and mushroom extract at 300 mg/kg cause significant decreases in enzyme activities compared with the aged control rats group. It could be seen from the data, no significant difference between aged rats fed on basal diet supplement with 300 mg/kg L-carnitine and 10% dried mushroom powder, and had significantly higher serum creatinine than aged rats supplemented with 600 mg/kg L-carnitine and 300 mg/kg body weight mushroom extract. The supplemented with L-carnitine caused little decreased but no significant deference between doses. Meanwhile, the supplemented by 300 mg/kg mushroom extract was (89.85 mg/dl) significant lower than the experimental aged rats. In aged untreated rats, a significant decrease (relative to young rats) in the level of reduced glutathione GSH was observed in serum. Administration of the L-carnitine 600 mg/kg and mushroom extract 300 SUMMARY103 mg/kg to aged rats elevated GSH to levels that approximated the levels in young rats. Effect of supplemented by L-carnitine, 10% dried mushroom and mushroom extract on histopathology examinations: The results of the present study suggest that an extract of the mushroom is able to confer protection against acute hepatotoxicity induced by administration of aging in rats. Heart of rats from groups 4 and 6 supplemented with 600 and 300 mg/kg body weight revealed no histopathological changes (Photos 15 and 16). Examined brain of rat from group supplemented with 300 mg/kg mushroom extract showed few pyknosis of neurons. L-carnitine and its derivatives have beneficial effects on various types of brain disorders.
