Abstract

Aim of the work
1- To determine the incidence of lower GI bleeding among the patients attending GIT out-patient clinic in EL-Minia university hospital.
2- To determine the etiological factors contributing to lower GI bleeding among those patients.
Conclusions
1- The incidence of bleeding per rectum among the attendants of the GIT out-patient clinic in EL-Minia university hospital was (1.8%).
2- Internal piles were the most common colonic lesions (30%), followed by inflammatory and ulcerative colonic lesions (25%), then colonic polyps (11.3%) and cancer colon (10%). Rectal varices (5%), stenotic lesions (1.3%) and solitary ulcer (1.3%) are less common causes.
3- Unexplained bleeding per rectum is not uncommon, and may need further modes of investigations.
4- Colonoscopy is considered a crucial investigation tool in different colorectal diseases as it provides tissue diagnosis and allows therapeutic interventions.
Recommendation
Colonoscopy is mandatory for every patient with bleeding per rectum to detect premalignant and early malignant lesions.
