Abstract

Many treatment processes such as chemical precIpitation. ultrafiltration, adsorption, reverse osmosis, and electrodeposition are currently used to remove heavy metal pollutants from water. Among these methods. electrodeposition onto carbon fiber (CF) is a new advanced method. The rate of Nt+ removal from synthetic waste solution by electrodeposition was studied under different conditions of initial Nickel ion concentration, solution flow rate. pH. electrolyte concentration. and potential on an electrochemical reactor.
Electrochemical reactor consists of tank for solution of Nickel sulphate, ammonium hydroxide, sulphuric acid, centrifugal pump. valves. elcctrochel1lical cell. carbon Fiber (CF) cathode ,and Lead anode, it was adopted in the electrodeposition studies at both open-circuit (OC) and closed-circuit. All experiments were performed with a DC power supply the working electrode was a cylindrical piece of Carbon Fiber (CFs) connected by a wire. The counter electrode was a cylindrical piece of lead attached to another wire. served as anode. The distance between the working electrode and counter electrode is 48 mm.
Under the present range of conditions it was found that the increase of initial Nickel ion concentration increased the rate of electrodeposition, also the increase of flow rate enhance the removal of Nickel by electrodeposition this are not necessarily restricted to the removal of this metal. The data were correlated by the following overall mass transfer correlation:
Sh = 8.4 Rell•24 Scll•J3
Finally The present study has revealed that electrodeposition on a Carbon Fiber Cathode is a powerful tool for removal of heavy metals from waste water and can play an important rule in waste water treatment.
