Abstract

The present investigation focused onthe following: a. Cultivation of the plant in the prevaailing conditions of EL-Sheikh Zuwayed station (Sh. Z.) and under specific conditions to study their effects on both the vegetative growth and active materials. b- Biologically directed fractionation of the aqueous extracts of the different organs of the wild plant. C- Isolation and identification of the cardenolides from the aqueous extracts having biological activity. d- pharmacological evaluations, toxicity, therapeutic index, standard safety margin and side effects [effect on blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate and ECG]. e- tissue culture, trials for production of cardenolides of this plant using defferent media and conditions.
The importance of the pergularia tomentosa as medicinal plant as cardiotonic was reported ages ago. Being a glycoside with a doubly linked sugar, ghalakinoside demonstrated a high stabikity and it resisted all types of hydrolysis. Accordingly our investigation was carried out on the aqueous extracts as it was previously reported that water as a solvent succeeded in extraction of ghalakinoside in a comaparable concentration to that of the methanol extract previously used for its isolation. Morever, the present study deal with the extraction and evaluation of the aerial parts of the plant with the aim of studying the possibility of making use of these organs without destroying the whole plant by taking its roots. Meanwhile, the investigation includes an agriculture experiment with the aim of priduction of this higly valuable medicinal plant under controlled conditions, as well as, trials for production of the main glycosides using tissue culture technique were carried out.
