Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and pattern of peripheral electrophysiological changes in patients with thyroid gland dysfunction The study included 32 thyroid patients divided into 2 groups; the hypothyroid group included 16 patients and the hyperthyroid group included 16 patients. The study also included 20 healthy volunteers as a control group All patients underwent the following:- Complete history taking Neurological examination with grading of muscle strength using MRC score Laboratory investigations that have included the measurement of serum level of TSH, FT3, FT4 and CPK Electrophysiological studies were done for patients and control groups on both sides of the body using Neuropack Nihon Koden® machine as follows:a) Motor conduction studies were done for median, ulnar, tibial and common peroneal nerves b) Sensory conduction studies were done for median, ulnar and sural nerves c) F-wave minimal latency was recorded in median, ulnar tibial and common peroneal nerves d) Needle EMG study was done for deltoid, APB, quadriceps and AHB.
