Abstract Aim of the work To assess patterns of anemia among attendants of the outpatient and inpatient pediatric clinics at EL-Minia University hospital. Conclusions This study confirms that iron deficiency anemia is the primary form of anemia in this population. Because of the well known deleterious effects of iron deficiency anemia on early childhood development and morbidity, an aggressive attempt to reverse this problem is clearly indicated. Iron enrichment of commonly used foods should be explored with improvement in overall nutritional status. The importance of iron supplementation to preterm, premature and normal infants was pointed out. The possibility of use of iron complexes to prevent iron deficiency, besides the usual ferrous sulfate was shown. Development of the socio economic base of the community is also crucial. The species of hookworm being transmitted in a community influences the burden of iron deficiency anemia in the community and should be considered in prioritizing and planning programs for hookworm and anemia control. Also, large scale studies on different age groups in various communities are recommended to obtain normal values of hematological and biochemical iron parameters in Egyptian children. Thus the actual cut off levels suitable for this countary can be obtained. |
