Abstract

An induction of labor refers to the process of artificially initiating uterine contractions, prior to their spontaneous onset, with the intention to effect progressive effacement and dilatation of the cervix and, ultimately, the delivery of a baby. The most important consideration with respect to labor induction is not how, but when, labor induction should be undertaken. Careful consideration must be given to potential benefits and risks to mother and baby, both physical and emotional, as well as to the state of the uterine cervix. The most common reasons for induction of labor are post-term pregnancy, diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
