Abstract

Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at high risk for death and significant short-term and long-term morbidity. Many factors contribute to the vulnerability of these high-risk infants, including conditions associated with an inflammatory process, such as chorioamnionitis, sepsis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. In this study, there were no significant correlations between median values of serum cortisol (C1, C2 and C3) and gestational age (r= -0.202, 0.032 and -0.213 respectively). Prematures who had infection at birth showed significant higher median values of serum cortisol (C1and C2) (p<0.05). Patients who exposed to perinatal hypoxia showed significant higher median values of cortisol level in the first 48 hours of life (C1) (p<0.05). There was insignificant variation in median cortisol levels between patients who were born by normal vaginal delivery and cesarean section (p>0.05).
