Abstract

The earthquake resistant design regulations in Egypt have undergone major changes over the past two decades especially after the October 12, 1992 earthquake which promotes the need for reconsidering the seismicity of Egypt and the necessity of including seismic loads in the design process. Several Egyptian codes of practice have been published in Egypt. The seismic loading provisions of these codes are of different design basis and parameters which lead to Numerous incosistencies and omissions associated with these building codes. The objective of this study is to assess the adequacy and completeness of the seismic load provisions in current Egyptian seismic building code, towards more reliable and consistent seismic design.
In this study, a preliminary seismic response analysis of two buildings was performed using three analysis procedures to evaluate the building seismic performance and the difference in global response predicted by three different methods of analysis. Moreover, three analysis procedures are evaluated for their ability to predict deformation demands in terms of inter-story drifts and potential failure mechanisms. Three ground motion earthquake records are used for these buildings seismic demands evaluation. The results demonstrated that, for the three analysis methods used in this study, different predictions of seismic response occured. Furthermore, the results of the analyses are used to evaluate the advantages, limitations, and ease of application of each approach for seismic analysis. Each method is shown to have merits and deficiencies that should be considered when selecting a seismic analysis method for a particular building structure.
To demonstrate the effect of the building structural properties on seismic response demands distribution through structural elements, the building model with different lateral and diaphragm rigidity have been analyzed. the results show that, the lateral and diaphragm rigidity have significant effects on ther shear and displacement demands calculated from response spectrum and nonlinear time history methods, while this effect cannot be evaluated using classical equivalent static method.
