Abstract Th.s work was carried out in the Internal Medicine, Medical Biochemistry and Radiology departments, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University between March, 2003 and October, 2005. This study aims at estimating serum level of cystatin C in patients with functional renal failure associated with liver cirrhosis and evaluating its value as a marker of early detection of renal impairment in cirrhotic patients Eighty individuals were included in this study, their ages ranged from 24 to 63 years with mean ±SD 44.7±8.8 years. They were classified into the following two main groups. 1- Group I (Control group): It included 20 adult healthy volunteers (13 males and 7 females) with age ranged from 25 to 51 years with mean ±SD 38.7±6.8 years. All ofthem had normal Liver and renal function. 2-Group II: It comprised 60 cirrhotic patients - Subgroup IIa: comprised 20 cirrhotic patients (12 males and 8 females) with age ranged from 24 to 63 years with mean ±SD 44.3±9.3 years and creatinine clearance ~ 70 ml/min. - Subgroup Ilb: It included 20 cirrhotic patients (15 males and 5 females) with age ranged from 38 to 60 years with mean ±SD 48.0 ±6.4 years and creatinine clearance 40-69 ml/min. - Subgroup lIe: It comprised 20 cirrhotic patients (12 males and 8 females) with age ranged from 27 to 60 years with mea ±SD 47.9±9.5 years and creatinine clearance < 40 ml/min.
