Abstract The use of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) has greatly influenced diagnosis and treatment planning for oral and maxillofacial lesions. Measuring the volume of any oral space occupying lesion is mandatory for accurate treatment planning and for surgical reconstruction after removal of the lesion. In our study we measured the volume of oral space occupying lesions (cyst, benign tumors, malignant tumors, infections), by using the conventional method of measuring the volume (multiplying the maximum anteroposterior width by the maximum mediolateral width by the number of cuts involving the lesion). The use of MDCT allowed volume measurement by the computer software which automatically calculates the volume of the lesion. The operator identifies the lesion on each cut by the computer mouse and the software calculates the volume of the entire lesion with great accuracy. |
