Abstract
Aim of the study
To evaluate serum levels of GH, IGFI in children with protein energy malnutrition and correlate their levels with other biochemical parameters.
Conclusion
1- The combination of low level of IGF I/Sm-C together with either normal or elevated level basal growth hormone is very suggestive of protein energy malnutrition and can help to distinguish growth failure due to growth hormone deficiency from that of PEM.
2- IGF I/Sm-C is a more sensitive indicator to the nutritional status than albumin.
3- These results demonstrated the importance of using IGF I/Sm-C as sensitive indicator in assessing either the nutritional status in the community or in the evaluation of therapeutic management of a disease. The only drawback of IGF I/Sm-C as indicator to nutritional status is its expense.
