In recent years, the major development in ring spinning has been the introduction and promotion of compact spinning. Compact spinning is a modified ring spinning process which has advantages and can be used in both short and long staple yam spinning areas. Previous
; studies reported that, in compact spinning the fibers are compacted into a narrow yarn after a virtually tension-free drafting process within a compacting zone and they are twisted after the nipping point as a compact sliver. Other researchers concluded that compact spinning process can produce ring spun yams with significantly lower twist multiples while maintaining similar yam qualities and that the yams spun on the compact spinning frame are characterized by higher tenacity, higher elongation at break, and a significantly smaller number of imperfections than that of the conventional ring spun yams. Researchers concluded that the pilling properties of the fabrics produced with compact-spun yams and the tensile strength of the fabrics produced with fmer compact-spun yams are better.
In this work, the effect of some spinning parameters on the quality of carded and combed compact yams were obtained. Six counts were produced three of which are carded and three are combed. Each carded Count was produced using four different types of cotton at different speed and different twist factor. For the combed yams, three types of cotton were used, also at different speed and twist factor. The produced yam properties were tested and the results were recorded.
For the produced yam properties, twist factor is the main factor influencing the different properties. Imperfections generally decreases with twist factor, and increases with speed and I count. Elongation and Tenacity generally increases with twist factor and decreases with speed
and count.
