Abstract
In this work we aimed at detecting the effect of natural ANF ( atrial extract) on suprarenal cortical functions in albino rats. In order to achieve this goal , an assay of plasma electrolytes (Sodium and potassium) and plasma adrenocortical hormones (aldosterone and cortisol ) was done 20 minutes after injection of the extract. This assay study is further supplemented by a histochemical study of adrenal cortex to detect the step at which ANF may act on steroid hormonal synthesis and the mechanism through which this hormone may act on the adrenal cortex. In conclusion, this work together in conjuction with the results of previous researchers suggest that atrial natriuretic factor not only acts on the kidney to enhance sodium excretion , but also this effect is paralleled by a direct action on the adrenal cortex to inhibit aldosterone hormone which is probably on additional mechanism through which ANF may exert a natriuretic response.
