Abstract

Adiponectin, an adipocyte -derived hormone, is thought to play an
important role in regulating blood glucose, lipid metabolism, endothelial
dysfunction, and proinflammatory mechanisms in humans, all of which
may contribute to the markedly increased risk of atherosclerosis.
Adiponectin levels are inversely associated with obesity,
especially central obesity, as well as with dyslipidemia and insulin
resistance. In addition, adiponectin has been shown to be a predictor of
cardiovascular events in diabetics.
This work aimed to evaluate the relation between plasma
adiponectin levels and dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetics.
The present study included forty six (46) patients (23 males and 23
females) with mean age 46.3 ± 4.5 (range 40-55 years). Thirty (30)
patients of them (15 males and 15 females) with type 2 diabetes mellitus
with mean ages 45.47±4.49 (range 40-55 years). In addition to sixteen
(16) IGT patients (8 males and 8 females) with mean age 47.88±4.33
(range 40-53 years).
The control group comprised of 10 apparently healthy individuals
(5 males and 5 females) with mean age 45.1± 3.57 (range 40-49 years)
matched gender, age and BMI with patients with diabetes and IGT.
They were divided into 3 groups:
Group I: Thirty (30) patients with type 2 DM
