Abstract

Localization is currently one of the hottest research areas. Knowing a device’s location creates a new era of location-based applications that are varying from route guidance and tourists services to E911. Many mobile devices currently provide an API to get the device’s location. Consequently, many location-based applications are implemented on mobile de¬vices. This emphasizes the need to thoroughly study the power consumption of location API on mobile devices, because energy is a scarce resource on mobile devices. We are presenting a study of the power consumption of location API on HTC Dream Android-powered device and showing how much power is consumed within different mobile components that are in¬volved in the localization process. We are proposing as well a low energy profile localization scheme that exploits the GPS, Accelerometer and Compass available in most of modern mo¬bile devices to build a localization scheme that provides decent accuracy for much lower energy pattern than that of GPS. We are finally suggesting a power-aware localization layer on top of Android’s original localization API. The power-aware layer gives developers con¬trol over the energy budget dedicated for the localization process as well as the accepted level of accuracy by the application. This can improve the power consumption pattern of the localization API in some scenarios.
