Abstract

Despite careful patient selection, the presence of decalcification (white spots) after removal of orthodontic appliances still remains a problem. br This clinical study was undertaken to compare the effect of light cured resin sealants versus enamel fluoridation on enamel demineralization. br Non restored, non carious first premolars, required extraction for orthodontic therapy, were used. br 12 patients were treated with full fixed orthodontic appliances using twin edge-wise brackets and bonded with chemical cure unfilled resin as recommended by manufacturer instructions. br These patients were divided equally into three groups. The first group used as a control group with no preventive method. The second group, patients used fluoride program consisted of home and office care. The third group, the labial surfaces were sealed with sealant of light cured resin immediately after bonding the brackets. br Just after 2 months, the premolars were extracted, brackets were debonded, the roots and the lingual parts of the crowns were cut off and the labial surfaces were examined in JEOL 53OO scanning electron microscope at 20 KV.
