Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a clinical syndrome characterized by hyperglycaemia due to deficiency or diminished effectiveness of insulin. The long-standing metabolic effect is frequently associated with permanent and irreversible functional and structural changes in the cells of the body. Diabetes mellitus is one of the major risk factors for blindness that is largely due to retinopathy and/or cataract. The caused of retinopathy in diabetic patients are multifactorial . Recently , insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy especially proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The results of our study revealed that : 1)* platelet count was unchanged in diabetic patients whether complicated or non-complicated. 2) * Aggregation response might not be that prominent diabetics as a result of partial platelet exhaustion and enhanced platelet activity is found only in diabetic patients with PDR |
