Abstract
The main aim of this study is to identify the main problems (obstacles or hindrances) that confront translators in order to find solutions, as possible. There are many attempts of classifying these problems. The study attempted to give a new classification that is suitable for translation between two different stem languages, i.e. Arabic and English. Here, the problems are divided into two main groups: the Linguistic Problems and the Extra-Linguistic Problems.
The former group of problems deals with the linguistic difficulties that concern the nature and use of the source and target languages. These difficulties may be the result of differences in grammar, sounds, words and others. On the other hand, the latter group of problems deals with the extra-linguistic (cultural) difficulties that concern the customs and traditions of these people. These difficulties may be the result of differences in religion, geography, social affairs and others.
The discussion shows that the translator, in order to give an equivalent-effect of the source text, should have a good knowledge of both the language and the culture of the source and target languages. Therefore, in translating a literarty work, two translators should contribute in rendering it: one of the source language and one of the target language.
