Abstract

Airway foreign bodies present a diagnostic dilemma and has been recognized for many years. Since foreign body inhalation can be a serious and sometimes fatal problem, early intervention and proper management is vital. Rigid bronchoscopy is the procedure of choice for removal of inhaled foreign bodies. Fortunately, most of the inhaled foreign bodies are visualized by endoscope and removed by one of the several types of capture forceps. The purpose of this study was to highlight foreign body inhalation and role of rigid bronchoscope in its management in Otolaryngology department in Menoufiya University hospitals & Shiben El-Kom teaching hospital and to determine incidence of tracheobronchial foreign body inhalation diagnosed and treated by rigid bronchoscope in Menoufiya governorate according to age, sex of patient, history of inhalation, clinical picture, duration from inhalation of foreign bodies to time of bronchoscopy, radiologic finding, operative finding (+ve or –ve), site of tracheal or bronchial) , side of foreign body (Right or Left), nature of foreign body and complications. This incidence in Menofiya governorate in the period from January 2007 to 31 December 2008 = 5.86 cases per 100.000 person/years.Foreign bodies of the tracheobronchial tree occur mainly in children, particularly in those under 6 years of age. The right bronchus is the site of predilection for foreign bodies because the carina is slightly to the left of the midline, the right bronchus is wider than the left, and the right bronchus has more direct extension of the trachea than the left bronchus. Inhaled solid or semisolid object may lodge in the larynx or trachea. If the object is large enough to cause nearly complete obstruction of the airway, asphyxia may rapidly cause death. Lesser degrees of obstruction, can result in less severe signs and symptoms. Clinical presentations of foreign bodies depend on size, shape and character of FB, age of patient, duration the FB inhalation and location of the FB.
