Abstract

The current investigation was conducted to study some soil -
water relationships that are expected to be of great concern in
constructing the irrigation and drainage systems of some newly
reclaimed soils in Egypt.
The study was carried out on ninteen profiles representing
alluvial t calcareous and sandy soils of Kafr EI Sheilek Governorate
andEI _ Noubaria (Nobaseed) . area and an eria behined Cairo -
Alexandria Dwsert Rood t respectively.
Statistical analyses were used as tools in evaluating Significancy
of correlations between some physical and chemical properties with
the amount of moisture retained by soils at the differant soil moisture
constants under study t i. e. maximum retentive capacity t field
capacity and Permanent wilting percentage . Also , the effects of the
different soil properties on the amounts of available water as well as
the saturated hydraulic conductivity in each of the investigated soils
were objects of the current study .
The results of this study can be sumanarized in the following :
(1) The investigated alluvial soils could be divided according to
88
their EC , pH and ESP. into saline, saline - sodie and sodie soils .
(2) According to their total prrosities the soils are arranged
descendingly as follows:
The alluvial> the calcareous> the sandy .
(3) The alluvial soils showed percentages of fine capillary pores
> water holding pores> volume of drainable pores . However in the
calcareous soils the percentages of the fine capillary pores , water
holding pores and volume drainable pores were very close to each
other . In the sandy soils , the percentages of the volume of drainable
pores were more than those of water holding pores whereas those of
the fme capillary pores were the least.
(4) The alluvial soils have the highest contents of the water stable
aggregates, the sandy soils showed the lowest contants and the
calcareous soils exhibited intermediate ones .
(5) The alluvial soils retained more moisture, at the different
moisture constants than the calcareous soils whose retalned moisture
exceeded that retained by the sandy soils .
