Abstract

Summary
The present investigation was carried out to study some
hydrophysical properties of newly reclaimed soils and their
relationship with some physical properties. The soil understudy
were different in their texture j i.e. sandy loam, sandy and
calcareous sandy clay loam which obtained at kilo 50 and kilo 62
of Cairo-Alex. desert road and the third soil from Nubaria. The
hydrophysical properties of soils under consideration were
infiltration rate, saturated hydraulic conductivity, unsaturated
hydraulic conductivity and soil water diffusivity where the
studied physical properties were particle size distribution,
bulk density, total porosity and pore size distribution, beside
the redistribution moisture content in covered and uncovered
plots of the three studied soils.
The results can be summarized as follow:
Infiltration rate of the three investigated soils decreased
with time. Their values were markedly lower in the calcareous
sandy clay loam than the other two soils.
The relationship between instantaneous infiltration rate
and coarse sand, total sand, quickly drainable pores and bulk
density were positive and significant at level of 1%. On the
other hand the relationships between instantaneous infiltration
rate and fine sand, clay, total porosity, water holding pores
119-
and fine capillary pores were negatively and significant at
level of 1%.
The relationships between the saturated hydraulic
conductivity and coarse sand. total sand. bulk density and
quickly drainable pores were positive and highly significant. On
the other hand values of the saturated hydraulic conductivity
were negatively and at high level of significancy with fine
sand. silt. total porosity. However the hydraul,c conductivity
correlated negatively but only 5% level of significancy with
clay, water holding pores and fine capillary pores.
Values of unsaturated hydraulic decreased with decreased in
~isture content and incieasing time after irrigation. Soil
water diffusivity decreased with increased in soil moisture
content so this parameter increased as time after irrigation
increased.
Redistribution of moisture cont.ent in covered and uncovered
pints of the three studied soils. Data indicated that moisture
content in covered plots were much higher than uncovered plot
for studied soils and the highest values of moisture content was
recorded in the calcareous sandy clay loam soil and also
moisture content increased with increasing soil depth wile
decreased with increasing time after irrigation.
