Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a serious public health problem that threatens the quality of life of patients and causes significant disability and premature death in many countries (1). In Egypt recent data suggest that diabetes is emerging as an important clinical and public health problem. Despite the high and increasing prevalence and the evidence that better knowledge is associated with better outcomes, Egypt currently lacks structured education and information program regarding diabetes both for people at risk of the disease and for people suffering from it in all health care services.
So far, little has been done to assess the current knowledge levels and behaviours of people with diabetes, or to evaluate their educational needs.
The aim of this work was to assess the knowledge and belief of diabetic patients regarding their disease, to reveal the effect of knowledge and beliefs on patients’ compliance and to identify factors that may contribute to the non-compliance.
To achieve these aims a descriptive cross sectional survey was selected. The study sample included 107 diabetic patients of both sexes registered in Smouha Family Health Unit (affiliated to the Health Insurance Organization), who have files for at least one year, visits the unit regularly, and completed their health education program for type 2 diabetes mellitus from the 1st of February to end of March 2009.
