Abstract

The present work aims at investigating opportunities for energy conservation in Western Desert Gas Complex (WDGC) through modification of the heat exchangers trains. Process Simulation of the plant was performed using HYSYS process steady state simulation program Version (3.2). This step was necessary to furnish stream property data requested for heat analysis as well as condensers and reboilers duties, usually a missing information in chemical processing plants.
Minimum heating and cooling energies requirements were calculated for four different values of minimum approach temperature (∆T min) namely 10ºC, 15ºC, 20ºC and 25ºC by two methods; the pinch method and the linear programming method; the two methods gave similar results.
The aim was reaching an optimum design of the Heat Exchangers Network (HEN) that uses the minimum utilities and at the same time achieves the least annualized total cost.
The optimum HEN was designed according to the Pinch Design Technology (PDT), where saving of hot and cold utilities reached to 42% and 21% respectively as compared to actual utilities consumption of WDGC.
Modifications to the existing network were proposed, by adding only two heat exchangers the maximum savings can be realized with a pay back period of ≈ 13 months
