Introduction:
Children of Mental disabilities need special education programs taking into account the limited mental abilities and help them to take advantage of these capabilities in development of personal and social skills and help them become self-reliant to the extent of their potential, in order to alleviate the problems they face because of mental disability.
Problems of children with mental disabilities - especially the disabled category of simple mental disability or who are educable are not restricted to those problems related to lack of mental competence, but they also suffer from various behavioral problems as hyperactivity as a result of being exposed to inappropriate conditions of social and psychological during the stages of their lives and upbringing .They often are exposed to ostracism and rejection of others, and they are neglected by those around them, reflecting the negative trends towards them.
Problem of the Study:
Problem of Mental Disability has appeared since ancient times. It is one of the problems that psychologists, educationists, sociologists ;besides, mental health, law, religion , family , other organizations and agencies of socialization are interested in.
Off the problem , the main question is as follows:
What is the effectiveness of a training program in development of some life skills and reducing hyperactivity in a sample of children with mental disabilities who are educable?
Off the main question, there are other several questions :
1 - To What extent are there significant differences between the mean ranks of scores of individuals in the experimental and control groups after application of the program using diagnostic scale of some life skills ?
2- To What extent are there significant differences between scores of individuals in the Pre test and Post test in the experimental group using diagnostic scale of some life skills of children with learning disabilities who are educable?
3- To What extent are there significant differences between scores of individuals in the post test and follow-up test in the experimental group using diagnostic scale of some life skills of children with learning disabilities who are educable?
4- To What extent are there significant differences between the mean ranks of scores of individuals in the experimental and control groups after application of the program using diagnostic scale of hyper activity?
5- To What extent are there significant differences between scores of individuals in the Pre test and Post test in the experimental group using diagnostic scale of hyper activity of children with learning disabilities who are educable?
6 - To What extent are there significant differences between scores of individuals in the post test and follow-up test in the experimental group using diagnostic scale of hyper activity of children with learning disabilities who are educable?
Aim Of The Study:
It aims at:
1 - Preparation of a training program for life skills development of children with mental disabilities who are educable.
2 – Knowing the effectiveness of the proposed program for reducing hyperactivity in children with mental disabilities and who are educable.
3 -Knowing the effectiveness of the proposed program in life skills and development reducing hyperactivity of Children with disabilities and who are the educable.
4- Presenting proposals and educational recommendations to benefit from them in the field of special education.
Importance of the Study:
Importance of the study is represented in the following:
1 - Finding problems with those children in terms of qualification and development of skills of adjustment that extends to several years.
2 - The need of those children for welfare programs that provide them with the preparation for life , self-reliance and satisfaction of their needs and indulging in society and interaction with others.
3 - The need of those children with mental disabilities who were educable for guidance and training programs which were different from those programs, that were presented to their counterparts to help them take advantage of those limited capabilities, skills and investment of them to the highest level. Those programs should have a great deal of flexibility to allow taking into account the individual differences that existed among children.
Hypotheses Of The Study:
In light of the aforementioned importance, aims, and problem of the research, in addition to the results of previous studies, the researcher addresses the following considerations in her study:
1- There were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of individuals, ranks in the experimental and control group after application of the program using a diagnostic scale of some life skills of mentally handicapped children who are educable in favor of the experimental group individuals.
2- There were statistically significant differences between the scores of individuals in the experimental group in the pre/ post test using a diagnostic scale of some life skills of mentally handicapped children who are educable in favor of the post test .
3- There were no statistically significant differences among the scores of individuals in the experimental group in the post test and follow-up test using a diagnostic scale of some life skills of mentally handicapped children who are educable.
4- There were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of individuals, ranks in the experimental and control group after application of the program using a diagnostic scale of hyperactivity of mentally handicapped children who are educable in favor of the experimental group individuals.
5- There were statistically significant differences between the scores of individuals in the experimental group in the pre/ post test using a diagnostic scale of hyperactivity of mentally handicapped children who are educable in favor of the post test.
6-There were no statistically significant differences among the scores of individuals in the experimental group in the post test and follow-up test using a diagnostic scale of hyperactivity of mentally handicapped children who are educable.
Sample Of Study:
The study sample consisted of (20) children who are mentally retarded they are divided into two parts: Experimental group’s (10) children, control group (10) children, from mental education School in Beni Suef, age is ranging from (9-15) years.
Tools Of Study:
The researcher tends to use the following tools in her study:
- Stanford test of intelligence fourth format Louis (1998.(
- A test of hyperactivity (H.A) of children with mental retardation prepared by Abdel Aziz A- shakhs ) 1984).
- Data gathering form prepared by the researcher.
- A scale of prepared by the social level - economic and cultural level of Egyptian family by the researcher.
- A scale for diagnosing some of life skills of children who are educable prepared by the researcher.
- A training program prepared by the researcher.
Statistical Manipulation Present In The Study:-
Non parametric techniques were used to test the validity of the study hypotheses, which were represented in the Mann Whitney. Test for significant differences between correlated ranks.
- Wilcoxon test for significance of non- correlated ranks
- The value of Z with the help of SPSS (V.13) program.
Results Of Study:
The results showed the following:-
1- The training program which was used in this study was effective for developing of some life skills and reducing hyper activity of the children with mild mentally retarded
2- The training program was distinguished by continues effectiveness, which appeared from the follow up study.
