Abstract

Sleep disorders are common among patients of chronic kidney disease. Their impact is remarkable on patient and his family quality of life. The impact on patient may be: - loss of job, reduced income, relationship changes and social exclusion. The impact on family may be positive and the family is brought together, may be negative and the family is driven apart. The most frequently reported disorders are sleep apnea, Restless Leg syndrome (RLS), insomnia and excessive day time sleepiness Methodology of the study : This study was a cross sectional study in its first part to detect the prevalence of sleep disorders in chronic kidney disease patients and its effect on quality of life of patients and caregivers The second part was analytical study to study the correlation of sleep disorders on quality of life of patients and caregivers.A personal interview was done with the patients and caregivers to fill the questionnaire, 10 of the patients were subjected to one night polysomnogram ,Hb% and serum Ca were done for all patients The study revealed the following results prevalence rate of sleep disorders reported in this study was 68,3% of CKD patients The commonest sleep disorder was insomnia (68.3%), followed by restless leg syndrome RLS (59.8%), excessive daytime sleepiness 41.5%), nightmares (28%), and obstructive sleep apnea OSA (15.9% There is a significant relation between anemia and presences of RLS There is a significant relation between hypo calcemia which occur in renal failure secondary to hyperparathyroidism and the presence of RLS.Sleep disorders greatly affect patients’ quality of life and have significant effect on it. 25% of patients having poor quality of life, 71.4%
having fair quality, while only 3.6% of all patients reported good quality of life.
