Abstract

II. Aim of the work
Fumonisin B1 is highly toxic mycotoxin, it affects on the most of animal species which feed on the crops contaminated with Fusarium moniliforme. The present work aimed to study the toxicity of FB1 in rats and the effect of some natural antioxidants (silymarin and grape seed extracts) on the recovery of this type of mycotoxins in rats fed with FB1 contaminated corn for two months.
V. Results
1. Total phenolic content
Firstly to confirm that the extracts used for the protection and treatment of fumonisin B1 in rats are useful, so the determination of phenol content should be considered. In the current study, by using different standards for each extract, the phenol content could be determined as following:
1.1. Silymarin
Phenol content of silymarin extract: using silymarin as standard total phenolic content concentrations as in fig. (10), was expressed as mg silyamrin equivalent/ml of extract. Total phenolic contents in terms of silymarin equivalents, in milk thistle extract was 0.52 mg/ml
1.2. Grape seed extract
Phenol content of grape seed extract: using gallic acid as standard total phenolic content concentrations as in fig. (11), was expressed as mg gallic acid equivalent/ml of extract. Total phenolic contents in terms of gallic acid equivalents, in grape seed extract was 0.72 mg/ml
