Abstract

This thesis attempts to provide a history of the social rapport between Muslims and Copts in Egypt and the Islamic influence on Coptic art through studying the Islamic style collection in Coptic Museum, Cairo during the period between the Arab conquest until the end of Muhammad Ali, age, to classify them by type and by date, and investigate their Islamic style decorative motifs and decorative techniques, through comparing the decorative motifs and techniques occurred on the surfaces of the studied collection with other contemporary Islamic masterpieces either those that were made in Egypt and now exhibiting in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo or other objects made and decorated in various Islamic countries. The main aim of this study is to establish, as far as possible a classification for the different types of Islamic style ornamentation and decorative techniques employed on the studied collection which, varied in form, construction, function, and material, either those that served secular or religious services. While scholars have, long known some of the objects discussed here, they either have previously been treated singly or in small groups; an overall survey such as this has not before been attempted.
To trace the surviving objects is by no means easy. All the studied objects are from the collection of the Coptic Museum, Cairo. Some of the objects are in show, while the rest are in the storerooms of the Museum. One main problem that confronted the researcher is to study the objects only through photographs that didn’t show some of the details especially the uncoloured illuminations, which copied after Simmika. M.A., Guide Sommaire du Mussée de Copte as it was so difficult to get them from the Museum for security reasons.
