Abstract

The western mediterranean desert of Egypt has a long history of land use During the last Glaciation of Wurm, the north african cost seems to have been nowhere a desert. The prosperity of the coast began to florish under the ptolemies and again under romans. Under meticulous roman rule, the productivity of the north african coast was maintained at such high levels that fertility of the nile valley and delta was obscured in comparison. They built extensive and efficient water storage and conservation works and turned the region into a granary and a vineyard.
