Abstract

Within Kachru’s Sociolinguistic profile of the English language (1992) and Milroy’s framework of the Ideology of language (2001), this study explores the attitude and identity of EFL Helwan university students from various majors towards two levels of Egyptian English accent: the Near Native Egyptian English Accent (NNEEA) and the Clear Egyptian English Accent (CEEA). Using the verbal- guise technique, attitude and identity towards both varieties were elicited. These attitudes were also compared to those of a group of native speakers in order to determine if there is an effect for the degree of clarity of the Egyptian English accent on the attitude and identity of the Egyptian students. The study also looks at the effect of several background variables on the attitude and identity of the students. The results show that students have positive attitude and identity towards the (NNEEA) variety and negative attitude & identity towards the (CEEA) variety. The comparison between the attitudes of the native group and the Helwan university students shows that some of these groups adopt an extremist attitude pointing out the effect of their ideological framework. The Major of study of the Helwan students is the only variable which has shown an effect on their attitude and identity. These results point out the ideological nature of attitude and the possible ideological frameworks that affect both attitude and identity.
