Abstract

Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that originate in the uterus. Fibroids are extremely common, occurring in up to one-third of all women. There are three main types of uterine fibroids-submucous, intramural and subserous.
Most fibroids are asymptomatic. However, Fibroids can, lead to problems in some women including heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), pelvic pain, pelvic pressure, back pain, constipation and bloating.
There are multiple surgical and non- surgical treatment options available for women with symptoms caused by their fibroids. Depending on size, number, and location of the fibroid tumors, certain treatment options may be more favorable for one patient than another. Medicine can shrink some fibroids. Some women need surgery (hysterectomy or myomectomy).
New researches reveal that these uterine fibroids may be treated by much less invasive means, thus preserving uterus. Uterine artery embolisation and HIFU represents a fundamental new approach to the treatment of fibroids.
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical procedure in which small particles are injected through a catheter placed in the uterine artery. The particles block the blood supply to the fibroids, resulting in the death of the fibroid tissue. This leads to shrinkage of the fibroids and relief of symptoms for most patients, without the need for surgery or removal of the uterus.
HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) is a highly precise procedure that heat and destroy diseased tissue without affecting the surrounding tissues around the fibroid.
