Abstract

This work is a trial to investigate some of the functions of the pineal gland of the Egyptian Camel (camalus Dromedarius) through studing the effect of the extract of this gland on the ghonads, thyroid and adrenal of male mature rabbits. The effect of this extract on the levels of gonodotrophic, thyrotrophic and adrenocortiotrophic hormones in the blood and pituitries of these animals was also investigated.
450 pineal bodies were collected from slaughtered mature camels, weighed and extracted. Each gram of the fresh glands gave yield of about 3.52 mg of the dry extract.
The extract was biologically tested by observing its antigonadotrophic effect on the male frogs. It was found that 3mg of the extract were capable to inhibit the sperm producing effect of 20 I.U. of H.C.G.
The effect of the pineal extract on the gonads, thyroid and adrenal was performed by using 12 sexually mature male rabbits, hals of the animals were inhected subcutenously by 4mg of the extract dialy for 14 days. The rabbits of the other half were used as a control and were injected with saline daily for the same period.
