Abstract

7- total of 114 newborn calves under 2 months of age from 2 dairy cattle farms ( Salhea farm and military farm) and one dairy buffalo farm ( Suez canal university farm) in Ismailia province were clinically examined for respiratory affections. Morbidity, mortality and case fatality rates were 89.7%, 17.9% and 20%, 46.9%, 3.1% and 6.7%, and 46.5%, 6.9% and 15% respectively. Clinical examination of affected calves revealed fever ranged from 39-41˚C in dairy cattle farm 1 and dairy buffalo farm, and 39-40˚C in dairy cattle farm 2, Presence of abnormal nasal discharges, lung auscultation revealed harsh loud breath sound and wheezes in three dairy farms beside crackles in dairy cattle farm 2 and dairy buffalo farm. Muzzle examination showed redness, ulceration and crust formation only in farm 1, coughing, dyspnea, conjunctivitis and corneal opacity. Oral cavity examination showed hyperemia, ulceration and necrosis only in farm 1 with ulceration only in buffalo farm. Nasal swabs, ocular swabs and buffy coat samples were collected from affected calves, BVDV were only isolated and identified by direct immunofluoresence from buffy coat samples from dairy cattle farm 1 and dairy buffalo farm, while BHV-1 were only isolated and identified by indirect immunofluoresence and PCR from nasal swabs from dairy cattle farm 1.
