Abstract

Oreochromis niloticus, were raised in six plastic aquaria each of which with 1000 liters capacity and 100 fish density and divided into two groups, the 1st group (control), three aquaria, the water used was tap water of Sadat Area Menofyia-Egypt and the 2nd group ( exposed to wastewaters), three aquaria the water used was the wastewaters of Sadat Area-Menofyia-Egypt. During the time of the experiment after acclimation period, seven months, water samples were taken from control and exposed groups for detection of lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and arsenic by Flame Emission Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results revealed that the average concentration of lead and cadmium in control water were 0.0147 ± 0.00448 and 0.0033 ± 0.00088 respectively , there were no detectable levels of chromium, mercury and arsenic in control water samples while the average concentration of lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and arsenic in wastewaters were 0.0213 ± 0.00882, 0.0197 ± 0.00736, 0.0103 ± 0.00393, 0.0347 ± 0.01220 and 0.0043 ± 0.00240 respectively. After the end of the experiment tissue samples were taken from both groups for detection of the previously mentioned heavy metals in liver, muscle and bone of fishes by Flame Emission Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.
