SUMMARY
This study was carried out during the summer seasons of 2005 to 2007 at Gemmeiza, Sakha and Mallawy Agric. Res. Stations, to study the general and specific combining abilities for 26 inbred lines derived from two sources (i.e. Tuxpeno USA and population-45), using line x tester analysis and to select the best inbred lines. The best inbred lines were crossed using diallel cross to estimate the general and specific combining abilities and to identify the best combinations. The obtained results were summarized as follow.
1- Line x tester analysis
Twenty six yellow maize inbred lines were topcrossed with three testers, i.e. inbred line Gm-1002, inbred line Gm-1021 and SC-155 (Gm-1002 x Gm-1021) to produce 78 topcrosses. These were evaluated at two locations, Gemmeiza (Gm) and Mallawy (Mall) Agric. Res. Stations.
Analysis of variance.
Separate analysis of variance revealed that significant or highly significant differences existed among crosses, lines as well as testers for all studied traits, except lines for ear diameter at the two locations and testers for ear diameter and number of rows per ear at Mallawy.
Line x tester interactions were significant or highly significant for all studied traits at the two locations, except plant height at Gemmeiza, ear length, 100-kernel weight and grain yield per plant at Mallawy and ear diameter and number of rows per ear at both locations.
