Abstract

Epidemiological studies on refugee children clearly show a wide range of estimates of psychiatric morbidity that may be attributed to such factors as the heterogeneity of the populations, differing diagnostic criteria, and differences in sampling methods and study design. Length of time post-trauma varies among the studies and likely account for some differences in rates; few studies use longitudinal designs with adequate follow-up time.
Concerning the risk factors affecting their condition, it was noticed that, not all refugee children exposed to traumatic events develop sever mental health problems or disorders, and a major research focus has been identifying factors (mediating factors) that are associated with increased risk (e.g. sexual abuse and parental depression) or decreased risk (e.g. healthy coping styles and intact family support) for developing these mental disorders.
