Abstract

SUMMARY
The present study was carried out on 100 donkeys suffering from lesions suggestive of equine sarcoids. These animals were collected from Veterinary Teaching Hospital- Assiut University, Veterinary Unites in Assiut Governorate and from Brooke Hospital in Aswan, Luxor and Edfo.
These animals were exposed to the following study:
I- History of the case: sex, age of the cases and clinical examination of the swelling according to Pascoe & Knottenbelt (1999).The examination include:
1-Types of the swellings.
2-Size of the swellings.
3- Multiplicity of the swellings.
4- Anatomical location of the swellings.
II- Histopathological examination of the swellings.
III– Treatment of the swelling according to size, location and characters of the swelling by one of the following methods.
A-Surgical excision of the swelling followed by suture of the wound [Group 1].
B-Surgical excision of the swelling without suture of the wound [group2].
C-Injection of the swelling by live attenuated BCG vaccine [Group 3].
Follow up of the cases was performed and the results were recorded as following:
I- History and clinical examination revealed that.
The animals were of both sex (43 males &57 females) and of different ages ranged from one year to more than ten years.
The duration of swelling were ten days to six months and of different size ranged from small nodule 1cm3 up to large size swelling reach to 1000 cm3 and the most common sarcoids size of about 125 cm3 up to 350 cm3.
Most number of cases had one swelling , little number of cases had two swelling and rare number of cases had three swelling.
Anatomical distribution of swellings was at the head & neck (37), limbs (63), abdomen, chest and wither (10) and in gental, paragenital, perineal and tail (13).
According to gross appearance sarcoid recorded in the present study include fibroblastic sarcoid (87), nodular sarcoid (21), verrucous sarcoid (9), and mixed sarcoid (6).
II- Histopathological examination.
Histopathological examination of the HE stained sections were revealed characters of equine sarcoid (epidermal hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and elongation of rete pegs ).
III-Resuts of treatment revalead that.
A- In the first & second groups, good healing were recorded in 69.8 – 78% of the treated swelling, while recurrences were occur in 22 – 30.2% during follow up period.
B- In the third group of the present study, all periocular sarcoids and sarcoids of chin &cheek (60%) showed regression and disappearance while all sarcoids affecting limbs and trunk (40%) were not respond to BCG treatment.
