المستخلص

Hyperbilirubinemia is a common problem during the neonatal period. It is usually benign in nature; however, severe indirect hyperbilirubinemia may induce irreversible toxic consequences mainly in the nervous system if left untreated. Furthermore, direct (conjugated) hyperbilirubinemia may be along with serious underlying causes.
Jaundice persisting beyond 14 days of life can be a sign of serious underlying pathology which needs urgent evaluation and treatment. Prolonged jaundice (PJ) causes parental anxiety as well as clinician dilemma, partly because of the need for extreme and varied investigations.
The aim of the present thesis is study the characteristics of prolonged neonatal jaundice and the possible associated risk factors. So, 32 neonates with prolonged jaundices were selected to participate in the study. In addiction, there were 118 neonates with non-prolonged jaundice and 30 healthy jaundice-free neonates.
