Abstract
Several fie1 and laboratory experimonts were carried out to develop and use a subsurface irrigation—fertilization technique for growing of wheat and pca crops in sandy calcareous soils. Three preliminary trials were conducted to establish a suitable design for the irrigation network whioh consisted of plastic pipes of different diameters and lengths attached to a main water reservoir. These trials included testing of: diameter of lateral lines, diameter of orifice opening, orifices sacing and position on the lateral tubes, length of lateral lines, water—head ressure, depth of lateral lines in the soil and the time eriods and intervals of irrigation.
The tested design was then used in two field experiments onducted in two soparate seasons at the University of osiut Experimental Station in El—Ghorieb. Two test crops:
heat and peas were arown under four irrigation systems:
ubsurface irrigation every one, two and 3 days and surface rrigation (as control) combined with four fertilization reatments including phosphorus and/or iron. Fertilizers ore applied in a solution form along with irrigation water ud in two rates: 30 or 60 Kg P205/feckan and 30 or 60 ppm of Fe in the soils
