Abstract SUMMARY The present investigation was carried out to study the problem of iron rich irrigation water and saline soils of E1—Dakhla oasis, New Valley Governorate. Relationships between these two factors and plant is considered. Mineralogical studies had been carried out using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) as well as some chemical properties to explore the following points: (1) Type of clay minerals and its relative abundance. (2) Free iron oxides; status and distribution in the dif f— erent soil fractions. (3) Effect of iron oxides on the CEC of the clay. (4) The mode and form of iron oxides in the soil. Sdil—plant—water relationships were also investigated through three pot experimentsas follows: 1- Quality of irrigation water expt., the effect of Ca/Mg ratio and salinity of irrigation water on the growth and uptake of Ca, Mg, K, P and Na of wheat plants were tested. Treatments included two salt concentrations (20 and 60 neq/L) and four treatments of Ca/Mg ratios (1:1, 2:1, 4:1 and 1:2) to irrigate wheat plants grown on two different soils (clay and loamy sand) from El-Dakhla oasis. |
