Abstract

The relationships between aphid species, host plants and planting dates were studied during three successive years of field work. The studies were conducted in the Faculty of Agrci1ture Research Farm, Assiut University, Assiut, Upper Egypt, throughout successive planting dates of 1992, 1993, 1994. Survey of aphids was achieved on three crops, cucumber, potato and artichoke. The observation and results obtained could be summarized as follows:
I- Monitoring Aphid Incidence:
a) Survey Studies on Cucumber:
L Yellow and green water pans:
1.1. In 1992 at late March planting date, 2006 individuals of 15 aphid species were collected by the yellow traps. Aphis gossypii was the most common and frequent species followed by Myzus persicae. Aphis nasturtii, Havhurstia atriplicis and Aphis craccivora were caught in low numbers. The swarming peak was observed between 6 and 13 May. The same trend was observed in case of the green pans which caught 1214 winged aphids of 10 species.
1.2. In 1992, at late April planting date, 740 individuals of 13 aphid species were identified with yellow pans. Aphis gossypii was the most dominant and frequant species, followed by Aphis ncisturtii. Other aphid species were caught with very low numbers. The highest population density was observed during the first ten days of July. Ti green pans collected 165 individuals belonging to 6 aphid species. The same trend and dominant species were also observed as in case of the yellow ones.
