المستخلص Articular cartilage has limited intrinsic repair capacity, and damage to cartilage or mechanical damage to the joint surface can be a risk for more extensive joint damage. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has become a widely accepted technique for treatment of articular cartilage lesions, and good to excellent clinical results have been reported. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) was originally proposed by Brittberg in 1994. It involves re-implantation of autologous cells that have been isolated from cartilage harvested from the patient and expanded in vitro. The procedure was designed for the treatment of symptomatic osteochondral defects of the knee and has recently been adapted for use in the shoulder and ankle. The aim of this essay is to review the recent trends in Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) and its efficacy in the treatment of osteochndral defects in the knee. |
