Abstract

The present work was carried out at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture Assiut University during two fall growing seasons, 1995-1996 and 1996-1997, to study the effect of planting date, cultivar and seed cutting on growth and yield of potato.
A split-split plot experiment was designed to study the effect of three planting dates namely, Sept. l, Oct. l and Nov. 1, 2-3 cv viz., Spunta, Diarnant and Ajax and two seed tuber treatments i.e., whole or cut seeds with similar size.
The results obtained could be summarized as follows:
1- Planting date affected plant emergence. Nov. 1st and Oct. 1 plantings showed higher percentage than Sept. l planting. Rate of field emergence was enhanced by delay in planting date. Oct. planting and Nov. planting resulted in higher emergence rate than Sept. Also, number of main stems per hill was affected by planting date. Oct. and Nov. plantings gave higher stem number per hill than did Sept. planting.
2- Planting date influenced stem growth. Oct. l gave higher stem length than Nov. l or Sept. i in both seasons.
3- Fresh weight per plant and tuber fresh weight per hill were significantly affected by planting date. The Oct. 1 planting produced higher values compared with other dates.
4- November and October plantings gave higher dry matter content of tubers and tuber number per hill than did September planting.
