Abstract

Anemia is a well known complication of chronic kidney disease that is mostly due to diminished production of erythropoietin. It results in reduced quality of life and functional status and an increased risk of left ventricular hypertrophy. Since the mid 1980s, recombinant human erythropoietin has become the standard treatment for anemia related to chronic kidney disease, and more than 4 million such patients worldwide have been treated with this drug. Its widespread use has been favoured because of its very high therapeutic index (Verhelst, et al., 2004).
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection continues to be prevalent in patients undergoing maintenance dialysis in developed and developing countries. Recent evidence shows that anti HCV seropositive status is significantly and independently associated with impaired survival in dialysis populations. The adverse consequences on long term graft and patient survival associated with an anti HCV positive status have been reported after kidney transplantation
