Abstract

This study was conducted on fifty patients having hepatocellular
carcinoma without extra-hepatic metastasis during the period from March
2008 to May 2010. They were divided in two main groups; surgical group
and non-surgical group. Each was divided into two subgroups. Surgical
group contained Liver Resection (LR) and Living Donar Liver
Transplantation (LDLT) subgroups. Non-surgical group contained Radio-
Frequency Ablation (RFA) and Trans-Hepatic Chemo-Embolization
(TACE) subgroups. Patients were with mean age of 55.84 years. 42 patients
were males (84%) and 8 were females (16%).
1. Group A (suq~ical mana~ement):

Regarding liver resection; Right hepatectomy was done for 9 patients
(60%) left hepatectomy for 2 patients (13.3%), atypical (localized) resection
for 4 patients (26.6%).
The mean time stay in ICU was 2.8 days (2-6 days). The hospitalization
stay period was 9.53 (8-20 days).

Regarding LDLT Right lobe graft was done in all 15 patients. The mean
time stay in ICU was 7.4 (5-10 days). The hospitalization stay period was
20.7 (17-30 days).
2. Group B (non-surgical management):
Of the 10 treated patients, 20 HCC nodules were treated in 20 sessions. In
these eight patients who subjected to RF A, response after the ablation was
apparent. This response continued with follow up, as patients mass and AFP
level decreased with time.

Seventeen sessions of T ACE were done for these ten patients. 2 sessions
were done in the hepatic artery proper, 10 sessions in the right hepatic artery
and 5 sessions in the left hepatic artery.
