Abstract

Most of the available information regarding effects of cancer on hemostatic system is derived from studies in cancers prevalent in adult age group. The aim of this study that we characterized the findings of thromboelastography, and measure parameters of hypercoagulation panel including antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with newly diagnosed cancer excluding leukemia, to compare these results with those of healthy controls. Our study was descriptive cross-sectional laboratory study, we obtained data on specimens from 40 patients with cancer (16 with solid tumor, 14 with brain tumor and 10 with lymphoma) and 40 age matched healthy children undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia as controls. Of 40 cancer patients, 8 patients had interpretation of hypercoagulable TEG profile. And there was statistical difference among the studied groups. Five cancer patients found to have positive lupus anticoagulant. Within the standard hemostatic panels children with cancer had significantly higher D-dimer, FVIII, fibrinogen and higher anticerdiolipin IgM, anti β2GB1 IgA and IgG levels when compared to control group. In conclusion: Children with newly diagnosed solid tumors have a high prevalence of prothrombotic markers, when compared to age/sex-matched controls. Positive D- .
