Abstract
MRU is a promising tool for the assessment of the urinary tract in children. Its ability to provide detailed information regarding anatomy, as well as renal function and drainage in a single study without the use of ionizing radiation sets MRU apart from coventional imaging techniques. MEU can be utilized in patients with iodine-based contrast allergy or impaired renal function, and is likely to emerge as the imaging modality of choice for children with complex genitourinary pathology.
MRU should be thought of as a problem-solving tool to define anatomy and function when conventional methods fall short. The impact of nanotechnology in the design of novel contrast agents and the development of new image-processing software will further enhance the diagnostic potential of MRU in pediatric urology in the future.
MRU in pediatrics should be proceeded by prober preimaging preparation including adequate sedation , hydration , diuretic injection , bladder catheterization and immobilization. Also MRU should be followed by postprocessing if possible to acquire sufficient information about the renal functions of the patient by calculating renal transit time, the calyceal transit time , the differantial renal function by both volume and Patlak number and signal intensity versus time curves. Different MRU techniques can be used in different situation which is a very important strength point for MRU in pediatrics with obstructive uropathy.
